What Is an End Mill?
An end mill is a rotary milling cutter with cutting edges located on both the end and the sides of the tool. Unlike a drill, which only creates holes, an end mill removes material while moving in multiple directions, making it capable of machining flat surfaces, slots, pockets, contours, steps, chamfers, and three-dimensional shapes.
End mills are held in collets or end mill holders and rotate at high speed while the workpiece is fed beneath the cutter. Depending on the cutter geometry and machine setup, end mills can perform rough machining, semi-finishing, or high-quality finishing operations with excellent dimensional accuracy.
Choosing the Right End Mill
Selecting the correct end mill depends on the workpiece material, machine capability, cutting operation, and required surface finish. High Speed Steel (HSS) end mills are economical, easy to resharpen, and ideal for manual milling machines or lower-speed machining operations. Solid carbide end mills offer greater hardness and wear resistance, allowing much higher cutting speeds, improved tool life, and better performance on CNC machining centers and difficult materials such as stainless steel and hardened steel.
