How Expandable Mandrels Work
Unlike a solid mandrel, which relies on a tight press or slight interference fit, an expandable mandrel uses a mechanism, commonly a tapered internal wedge, a series of expanding segments, or a hydraulic bladder, that grows in diameter once inserted into the workpiece bore. Tightening the mandrel expands it evenly against the inside surface of the hole, centering and locking the part in place without marking or distorting a finished bore the way a press fit sometimes can.
This makes expandable mandrels especially useful for finished or precision-bored parts, such as bearing races, bushings, or gears, where the bore has already been machined to final size and cannot tolerate the scarring a solid press-fit mandrel might leave behind.
